How To Maintain A Healthy Relationship

Maintaining a healthy relationship over a long period of time takes a lot of effort and an equal amount of desire.

It's always easier to just go with the flow and let the relationship take it's own course, but making a conscious effort to keep each other happy is the key to longevity.

Compliment Each Other

Over time the qualities we see in people become less apparent. Those qualities are still present but becomes less obvious because it's a behavior we've become used to, and actually expect.

It's our very expectations over time that results in us complimenting our partners less. You have to make a conscious effort to compliment and remind someone how much you appreciate a certain quality.

People often chalk this up to being unnecessary, because "they already know". If you've gone long periods of time without telling your partner how much you value their honesty or friendship, they may begin to feel less appreciated.

Try New Things Together

When you've been in a relationship with someone for years, or even decades, you may find yourself short on new topics of conversation. You spend so much time together that you pretty much already know what the other person has to say.

You can develop a new connection by trying new hobbies or adventures together. Taking a trip to a location neither of you are familiar with, will open a new dialogue and help you grow together.

It's important to find new ways to connect with each other spiritually, physically and emotionally as the relationship matures.

Filter Out Small Disagreements

Small, petty disagreements have the power to compound into a negative force that drives a wedge in your relationship. If you find yourself constantly bickering and trying to get the last word in every disagreement, you may want to step back and evaluate the health of your relationship.

It can be helpful to openly discuss how you want to handle small disagreements. It's better for the long term health of the relationship if you can find an acceptable way to disagree.

You don't always have to agree with what your partner is saying, but finding a respectable way to disagree is key to happiness.

Allow Each Other To Evolve

While it's important to stay connected and spend time together, it's also important to give each other space and develop interests outside the relationship.

Giving each other a day to explore personal hobbies or interests, will help you develop as individuals. It also provides new topics of conversation into your relationship as you tell you partner about your new hobbies.
